Written in 1862 La Forza Del Destino was written after a two-year gap in Verdi's composing. The work was comissioned in late 1860 by the Imperial Theater of St. Petersburg and is now regarded by many as Verdi's most extensive and dramatically intricate opera.

This Libretto is the revised version which Verdi worked on with Antonio Ghislanzoni. It premiered at La Scala, Milan on February 27, 1869 and has a different ending to Piave's original story. English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.
