Charlie Christian was one of the most influential jazz guitarists of the swing era, an innovator and accomplished player who brought the guitar closer to the front of the band rather than the rhythm instrument it began as.

Chord shapes form a visual frame of reference for the player, so it is easier to play the single note, improvised horn-like lines out of chord shapes that Charlie Christian was known for.
